For anyone who keeps track of my rats and such, Sara has passed. I wrote a bit about it in the "My Rats" section of the site. She lived a long life and will be dearly missed by everyone who knew her.

Rats As Pets;

Rats really are wonderful pets. Anybody who has raised them and had the time to experience the bond between a rat and its human will tell you that they are amazing. Rats have such a bad reputation in society these days, but they don't deserve it at all. They are one of the top 10 smartest land animals and are easily comparable to cats and dogs. I've created this site to share the stories of my four-legged, furry little children in hopes to change the minds of some people who may be scared, grossed out, or against having rats as pets.

Did you know?
Rats did not, in fact, give us the plague. Parasites such as fleas carried the plague and infested the rats. Ships coming from overseas had rats infest them. In reality, it is not the rats who are to blame, but the unhealthy conditions of the ships at the time who harbored rats from different countries. Rattus Norvegicus (the brown rat) is the species of rat we buy as pets. A whole different genus of rat carried the black plague. Rattus Rattus carried the plague flea. So domesticated pet rats have absolutely NO connection with the plague whatsoever.
Ships brought the rats, rats brought the fleas, fleas brought the plague. If this is the reason you're afraid of rats, you've got just as much of a reason to be afraid of ships- and that's not very logical.
